 STRENGTH OF MATERIALS PROBLEMS

PROBLEM 1: Determine the largest weight (W) which can be supported by the two wires shown in the figure. The stresses in wires AB and AC are not to exceed 100 MPa and 150 MPa, respectively. The cross- sectional area of the two wires are 400 mm2 for wire AB and 200 mm2 for wire AC

PROBLEM 2: For the truss shown in the figure, calculate the stresses in members DF, CE, and BD. The cross-sectional area of each member is 1,200 mm2. Indicate tension (T) or compression (C)

PROBLEM 3: For the truss shown in the figure, determine the cross-sectional areas of bars BE,BF and CF so that the stresses will not exceed 100 MN/m2 in tension or 80 MN/m2 compression. A reduced stress in compression is specified to avoid the danger of buckling.

PROBLEM 4: The mass of the homogenous bar AB is shown in the figure is 1000 kilogram. The bar is supported by a pin at A and a smooth vertical surface at B. Determine the diameter of the smallest pin which can be used as A if its shear stress is limited at 50 MPA.

PROBLEM 5: A cast-iron column supports an axial compressive load of 250 kN. Determine the inside diameter of the column if its outside diameter is 200 mm and the limiting compressive stress is 50 MPa.

PROBLEM 6: A hollow steel tube with an inside diameter of 100mm must carry a tensile load of 400 kN. Determine the outside diameter of the tube if the stress is limited to 120 MN/m2.

PROBLEM 7: A homogeneous 800 kg bar AB is supported at either end by a cable as shown in the figure. Calculate the smallest area of each cable if the stress is not to exceed 90 MPa in bronze and 120 MPa in steel. 

PROBLEM 8: The homogeneous bar shown in the figure is supported by a smooth pin at C and a cable that runs from A to B around the smooth peg at D. Find the stress in the cable if its diameter is 0.6 inch and the bar weighs 6000 lb. 

PROBLEM 9: A rod is composed of an aluminum section rigidly attached between steel and bronze sections, as shown in the figure. Axial loads are applied at the positions indicated. If P = 3000 lb and the cross-sectional area of the rod is 0.5 in2 , determine the stress in each section. 

PROBLEM 10: Steel rails 10 m long are laid with a clearance of 3 mm at a temperature of 15°C. Use a 11.7 x 10^-6 per degree centigrade and modulus of elasticity of steel is 200000 MPa. Determine the temperature of steel so that rails will just touch.

PROBLEM 11: A cubical section has E=200,000 MPa and Poissons ratio=0.30.  Determine the compressive stress acting on each side of its faces if the volume of the cube is reduced by 0.15%.
